For Online Fundraising (and Giving Tuesday).... More IS more!
For the first time ever, there were TWO Giving Tuesday online fundraisers in 2020: one in May and one in December.
Some think that one event poached donations from the other... and that it resulted in less donations overall. But, that's not what happened at all. When executed well, MORE online fundraisers results in MORE donations... not less...
Giving Tuesday was a perfect example of that.
63% of donors that give on Giving Tuesday don't give on any other day of the year. And that's one of the big reasons it didn't negatively impact total donations.
This is a segmented, specific audience that has the mentality of "this day is for me!"
So, when a second Giving Tuesday was added in May of 2020, donors had that same thought, "I'm in! Who can I support today?"
How do I know? I've been taking a deep dive into the data.
Let's look at the numbers in the United States:
Giving Tuesday 2019 (1 Giving Day): $1.97 BILLION
Giving Tuesday 2020 (2 Giving Days): $503 million in May & $2.47 BILLION in December 🤯
⚠️One event didn't take from the other event. Not even close.
What's the lesson here?
More fundraisers = more donations.
You can create online fundraisers more often than you think -- but making it specific, timely, and FUN to join is key. A vague "support our mission" isn't going to do the trick.
If you're wondering if there will be another Giving Tuesday Now in May of this year, I've checked with the Giving Tuesday team and no, there will not be.
Bummer, right?
Sort of.
I see a ton of opportunity here.
You can bolster the frequency of your online fundraisers and consider running a one-day or week-long social media fundraiser exclusively targeting those Giving Tuesday supporters in the spring or summer to your unique community online.
