My Favorite Detective Show's Ultimate Storytelling Hack (that works for every brand!)
There’s no spoilers in this blog, but just to say if you haven’t watched Only Murders in the Building, do it!
Martin Short is a gem -- it's worth the watch just to see him and Steve Martin banter. So good.
These Podcasting-amateur-detectives are trying to solve a murder, and in the process drop a serious tip on how you can connect to your audience on a wayyyyyy deeper level.
Ready for the formula?
They get schooled by an actual detective who shares that they need to focus on:
The who
The how
The why
The why now
This is gold.
Think about your next campaign. You might be selling a product, trying to recruit new clients, supporters, donors, all the things…
Let’s say you’re trying to get someone to take action and click your “link in bio” on your instagram.
Before you say, “Instagram doesn’t work for us.”
Here’s how you can use the formula to blow your next campaign out-of-the-water:
The WHO: Have you narrowed in your voice, captions, and visuals to appeal to that specific audience? Is it vague? Vague=people keep scrolling on by
THE HOW: are you making it uber-easy and clear? Want them to purchase a product, attend an event, make a donation… did you actually say it in a clear & compelling way? Ask a neighbor or someone who is new to your org to take a look at a recent social post and see if the call to action is compelling and makes sense!
THE WHY: you might call this the value proposition (“what’s in it for me?”), but essentially you want to ensure your WHY is very compelling. “We’re the only bakery in Atlanta that sells gluten free biscuits that taste BETTER than the ones your Nana made growing up!” Or “Our org delivers meals to seniors in rural areas who don’t have access to public transportation.”
THE WHY NOW: okay y’all, this is the urgency piece. This is everything! Why should someone take action NOW instead of 6 months from now? PAINT THE PICTURE. “For a limited time, we’re selling our life-altering gluten-free biscuits frozen so you can have them fresh out of the oven on Christmas morning! Every batch is handmade so supply is limited! Pre-order yours now.”
